Apple iPad Unboxing
No doubt about it, the Apple iPad is quickly becoming the next rave. This past Saturday Apple released their 16, 32, and 64GB Wifi models (3G models are due at the end of April). This is an unboxing of the $599 32GB Wifi only model. The iPad has a 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS touch-screen display (1024-by-768-pixel resolution), is framed by a 1-inch black border, and weighs 1.5 pounds. Apple promises a very reasonable 10 hour battery life.
PCMAG calls the iPad a winner because is combines an improved browser, e-mail, iPod, and photo applications, a well-executed e-Book platform with iBooks, thousands of downloadable apps and games, all packaged that gorgeous and slim 9.7-inch touch screen.
Ubergizmo describes that the iPad’s build quality is excellent. The display looks great in light lighting and gets a fair amount of reflections in sunlight (like most LCD’s). The browsing interface is very easy and intuitive to learn. They explain that the iPad is great for web browsing, email, watching streaming movies (via Netflix or YouTube), reading news and comics, map and GPS navigation, and looking at pictures.
One of the main reasons to buy the iPad will be the extensive access to the apps from Apple’s app store. At the time of Saturday’s launch there are only 1,000 apps. However, after only 2 years of the Iphone and iPod touch have been in existence 3rd party developers have produced over 150,000 apps. Give developers 2-4 months and you’ll see well over 20,000 apps out there. Imagine what fun the Pandora, Hulu, Internet Radio, YouTube, and Flickr apps will be!
The iPad isn’t cheap and isn’t perfect. It doesn’t have a camera, doesn’t have support for flash (makes websites do animations), and can’t multitask. But, what it does do it does very well. It’s got a fast 1GHz processor which allows fast and responsive web browsing and app using while still promising 10 hour battery life. I’d love to get my hands on one!
