Gateways FX6831-01: A Great Mid-Level Gamer

Looking for a great gaming desktop but don’t have $5,000 to spend? The Gateway FX6831-01 brings just enough power to the table to be a good gaming value. It only costs $1,299 – $1,599 depending on configuration. The machine comes outfitted with a powerful Intel i7-860 processor and a generous 8GB of DDR3 RAM. This Intel i7 is a very interesting CPU! It normally runs at 2.8GHz but has a Turbo Boost mode that can clock the machine up to 3.46GHz using multiple cores. The fewer cores being used, the closer the system is to 3.46GHz; the more cores, the nearer it is to 2.8GHz.

The FX6831-01 comes with ATI’s Radeon HD 5850 graphics card (which has 1GB of memory). CNET indicates that this card combined with the cpu is nearly one of  the fastest systems they’ve recently tested. It ran Far Cry 2 at 74 frames per second on highest resolution. They indicate that the FX6831-01 will handle the demands of any PC game on displays up to 24 inches and at high image-quality settings.

The FX6831-01 comes with a pretty interesting case. Some might not like the armored looking from panel with it red lights. It comes with a huge 1.5TB hard drive, DVD burner, and Windows 7 Home Premium.

User Opinions
Amazon users rate the system at 4 stars with 16 reviews. They echo CNET’s opinion about it being able to easily play high end games. One user said thought that the system is a great Bang for your buck! It provides the best performance for a prebuilt i7 Quad Core & High Performance Video card you can get on the market as of March 2010.

Newegg users give the FX6831-01 a 4 egg rating with 16 total reviews. They indicate that it’s fast, quiet, and very cool system. One technician said that he regularly plays fallout3, World of Warcraft, Diablo2, and Torchlight with no hiccups or slowness with graphics at max settings. He said that the huge 1.5TB storage is wonderful; that this would also be a great photo editing system as well. As always, you’ll have to remove the pre-installed crapware.
