Before we move onto Best Buy’s desktops let’s take a look at one final gaming laptop. The Alienware M17X-2308MBK is designed for high performance portable gaming. Alienware has a reputation for producing high end gaming rigs with the fastest hardware available; the M17X-2308MBK is no exception! Inside you’ll find the Intel Core 2 (Q9000 (Penryn) which features 4 cores running at 2GHz. On the memory front there’s 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM installed which can be upgraded to 8GB. Your graphics card is the NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 260M which has 1GB dedicated video memory, 112 CUDA core, and runs at 1375 MHz.  The 500GB hard drive spins at 7200rpm and Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive has double-layer support. Best Buy currently has 9 laptops that are designed for gaming. Their top gaming laptop is the Asus G72GX-RBBX05. It’s got a large 17.3″ LCD widescreen,  an (P8700)  Intel Core 2 CPU running at 2.53GHz, 6GB of (DDR2) RAM, and a 500GB (540000RPM) hard drive. It’s (nVidia GTX 260M 1GB) graphics card has enough power to handle most of today’s 3-D games. Everything else that comes with this system is pretty standard: Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW (dual layer) drive, 1.3MP webcame, 8-1 in media reader, wireless N, and gigabit networking. Windows 7 64 Bit Version is your operating system, overall weight is 8.8 pounds. Best Buy indicates that the battery life is 1 hour, 23 minutes…that’s pretty piss poor!

Our Best Buy journey has begun! This month we’re taking a close look at Best Buy’s most popular desktops, laptops, and notebooks. We’ll begin our foray by looking at their most popular gaming laptops.

The Asus G73JH-RBBX09 is the one of the top selling gaming laptops at Best Buy. If you’re looking for a large screen laptop that has oomph to play any of today’s 3-D games this is it. It’s got a larger 17.3-inch LCD which everybody seems to love, an ultra powerful quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (720QM), and a ferocious 8GB of GDDR5 memory. Look under the hood at the Graphics card and you’ll find the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870. This graphics card is today’s most powerful video card for mobile computing. Gamers say it plays Modern Warfare 2 and Crysis on maximum settings “like a hot knife through butter.” Also inside is a 1TB hard drive (7200rpm) and Windows 7 (64 Bit Version). The think  weighs 7.5 pounds and is 2.2″ thin. Unfortunately all this power does come at a price: battery life is just under 2 hours.

This week Newegg’s deal of the week is the Lenovo IdeaPad Y550-41865GU. This Lenovo is a mid range all purpose laptop that can be used to business use, gaming, or everyday computing. It’s got a Intel Core Duo 2.13Ghz processor with 4GB the faster DDR3 RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. Buyers indicate that the NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M video card. They consider it a mid level card that packs enough power to play most games running at mid to high level settings. It comes with a DVD±R/RW optical drive, a 1.3MP camera, wireless N WiFi, and Windows Home Premium. The 6 cell battery typically will last 2-4 hours. The Y550-41865GUsells for $799 at on Newegg, $200 off the regular $999 price.

Asus has created an excellent laptop for the serious gamer who loves large screens. Their N61JQ-X1 has a 16″ LCD (1366×768 resolution), weighs 6.5 pounds, and pack hardware that delivers a serious punch! Gaming enthusiasts are delighted with it’s ultra fast quad core CPU (Intel Core i7 720QM at 1.6GHz) and video card (ATI Mobility Radeon 5730). The N61JQ-X easily runs today’s top end games “like butter.”

The N61JQ-X comes with 4 GB (DDR3-1066) of RAM,  a medium sized 320 GB 7200rpm hard drive, and a DVD optical drive (instead of Blue Ray). One of the most interesting things about the N61JQ-X1 is the Turbo Mode. When turned in the machine boosts the clock speed from 1.6 GHz  to 2.8 GHz (using 4 cpu cores). Top end laptops: everybody wants one but most of us can't afford one. Those lucky enough to have an extra $2,299 laying around can purchase the Sony Vaio VPCZ116GX/S and be happy with high end componets! This 13 inch Ultra Thin has a CPU (2.4GHz Intel Core i5 M520) and Graphics Card (Nvidia GeForce GT 330M) that packs enough power to play mid level games and multitask with ease. The high end 256GB SSD hard drive is very fast and outperforms older SATA hard drives.  The thing weighs 3.0 pounds and has a battery that lasts about 3 hours. Make no doubt about it – Alienware is king in the computer gaming world. Their machines cost a pretty buck but deliver top end gaming performance. The Alienware M15x is a vast improvement over previous generations: it’s 15.6″ screen has a shows high def in all it’s glory (1920 x 1080 resolution), it’s Core i7 720QM CPU scores ultra high on PCMark Vantage, and it’s video card scores above average compared to others in its class. The chassis is a little bulky and speaker quality somewhat sub par. At max settings battery life is limited to two hours. CNET gives the M15x 4 out of 5 stars because of the amazingly powerful CPU & Video card.
The top end tricked out system costs $3,199. If you’re a gamer looking for your next rig the M15x is worth every penny.

This week Newegg is featuring the Acer Aspire AS5739G-6959 for $649.99. That’s actually a $150 savings off the usual $799.99 price. It’s nearly identical to the Acer AS5739G-6132 which ranked #1 in our Best 5 Laptops on Newegg – October Edition. This machine’s main two drawing points are the bright 15.6″ LED backlight display (1366 x 768 resolution) and the powerful 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M video card. News flash! This video card is a pure beast according to this user opinion on Tom’s Hardware. It runs World of Warcraft on highest settings! The CPU is a 2.2GHz Intel Dual Core with 4GB RAM and a 320GB Hard drive.
