The ASUS UL30A-X5 is a 12 Hour Laptop for Road Warriors
The mobile business person will love the ASUS UL30A-X5. The greatest thing about this Thin & Light laptop is it’s battery life – 12 hours! The thing has a 13.3″ screen, is less then 1″ thick, and only weighs 3.74 pounds! Inside you’ve got a 1.3GHz Intel SU7300 Core 2 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 500GB (5400 rpm) hard drive. Like most Ultra Thins this baby sports an on-board (Intel GMA 4500MHD) video card that allows you to efficiently multitask without killing battery life. Keep in mind that it’s not a gaming monster! The processor has been dialed down to extend the battery life; it can’t handle intense 3-D games. Amazon sells the UL30A-X5 for $649.99 with free shipping. Read the rest of this entry »
Apple iPad Unboxing
No doubt about it, the Apple iPad is quickly becoming the next rave. This past Saturday Apple released their 16, 32, and 64GB Wifi models (3G models are due at the end of April). This is an unboxing of the $599 32GB Wifi only model. The iPad has a 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS touch-screen display (1024-by-768-pixel resolution), is framed by a 1-inch black border, and weighs 1.5 pounds. Apple promises a very reasonable 10 hour battery life.
PCMAG calls the iPad a winner because is combines an improved browser, e-mail, iPod, and photo applications, a well-executed e-Book platform with iBooks, thousands of downloadable apps and games, all packaged that gorgeous and slim 9.7-inch touch screen.
Ubergizmo describes that the iPad’s build quality is excellent. The display looks great in light lighting and gets a fair amount of reflections in sunlight (like most LCD’s). The browsing interface is very easy and intuitive to learn. They explain that the iPad is great for web browsing, email, watching streaming movies (via Netflix or YouTube), reading news and comics, map and GPS navigation, and looking at pictures. The HP DM3 1030US is a Moderate Ultra Thin
HP has, with moderate success, plunged into the so called “Ultra Thin” laptop category with their DM3-1030US. This system has a slower CPU that makes it best used for everyday simplistic computing. The processor is actually the AMD’s newest creation (Athlon Neo X2 Dual Core) running at 1.6GHz. The machine comes with a 320GB hard drive, 4GB of DDR 2 RAM, and a 13.3-inch LCD screen (1366 x 768 resolution). Of course it’s got wireless g/n, WLAN, and Bluetooth, and a 5-in-1 digital media reader.
When you break it down to the bare essentials, the DM3-1030US pro’s and con’s are about even. On the good side the battery lasts about 5 hours, the system can has enough power to play high def movies, the keyboard works well, and the system has a sleek design. On the bad side PC Mag reveals that AMD’s processing power is substantially weaker compared to Intel Dual Core machines. The toughpad is a serious failure according to Wired; its glossy surface is very hard to use. The laptop weighs 4.2 pounds – pretty heavy for an Ultra Thin!
You can find the HP DM3-1030US priced $609.95 at B&H Photo, $614.95 at Amazon, and $649.99 at ClubMac.
If you’re attracted to the long battery life but are turned off by the negatives consider Toshiba’s T135-S1309. It’s an 8 hour Ultra thin machine that has Intel Dual Core processing power. Here’s the full review on CNET.
